These Memories

Yesterday, I forgot to post on the blog. Larry asked me about it last night. He told me that he pulled up the web site and there was no June 21st, 2021 entry. I was busy yesterday morning and preoccupied. It was my daughter Jamison’s birthday, I had a virtual appointment with a speech pathologist and I also treated myself to a manicure and pedicure. It was just an odd morning and there was one huge thing that was breaking my heart……

Last Thursday, a person dear to me, passed away. Mary Garcia lived across the street from my parents when I was young. She and Mr Garcia had three beautiful children and were the most wonderful family.

The Garcia’s loved my daughters very much and one memory…when Lauren our oldest, was about 1 1/2 years old, we went to a minor league baseball game in Memphis TN with with Mr and Mrs Garcia. (YES! We always called then that even to this day) Mr Garcia fed baby Lauren jalapenos for the first time. It was so adorable. Mr Garcia was so proud of himself, and baby Lauren’s nose began to run. Mrs Garcia gave mr Garcia the What Are You Doing look…… and I just smiled…even now I can see the three of them. Lauren in her red romper having the best time with the Garcia’s.

Mrs Garcia was always special to me. She allowed me to feel that she was “family” while she mentored and taught me important things in life….Faith, quilting, special recipes….and how to love. I have known Mrs Garcia since 1974. She gave me something so valuable that will always live in my heart.

I miss her so much right now…that I am blasting Henry Mancini music and crying, while I write these memories…….

Love you beyond the moon.

Vocal Cords For Dummies And Camp Days

Part One~Vocal Cords

I have had a few surgeries on my throat (parathyroidectomies) and there is a lot scar tissue surrounding the organs that let me talk. I have had trouble speaking for 2 months now and needed to visit a DR.

As promised, I am sharing with you, what I learned from my Dr this week. My DR is a Laryngologist at the famed Baylor Voice Center in Dallas Texas. She numbed my throat and put the scope through my nose and down my throat. We learned that my left vocal cord is paralyzed. I will have another surgery in July to try to fix it….

When we talk, the vocal cords open and close meeting in the center allowing air to go in and out, making the sounds of communication. Because only one of mine works, I have trouble breathing and talking. My oxygen levels are a mess, making me very tired. DR H said that when fixed, my voice will sound different. Larry asked the Dr if I will be able to sing….well, you know the old joke. Larry always makes me smile.

Camp Days

Because I am not 100% yet, we decided that instead of CAMP ROBI being every day for one week, we are going to have Camp Robi one day a week all summer long! I am sure that it will be as fun as usual and this helps Camp Robi last longer!

The first day of Camp Robi was a success! Matilda came to The Cottage and we hung out for a bit, playing games and eating turkey sandwiches for lunch. Then spent the afternoon at PINSTACK, playing games and ending with bowling and dinner.

Matilda won the Camp Robi Bowling challenge. ($20.00) Congratulations Matilda!

Day two of Camp is going to be wonderful too! There is so much to look forward to this summer.

Getting That MOJO Back Again

This morning I took the garbage out to the bin and it was already warm. The street was quiet and it reminded me of living in Raleigh, North Carolina when I was 15 years old. During the summers I would babysit every day, often for moms who worked and took advantage of my school being out. I loved those summers.

The neighborhood I lived in, was built around a huge lake. It was beautiful but made summer days humid and a little bit moldy smelling. I walked by that lake every day. Twice a day! During those hot summer days, I would care for children and create ART. I was in high school and never lacked for something to do with my hands.

Now……I’ve been “off” a bit with creativity these days. That means get out my Artist Way work-book and get to work.

Photo: The Artist Way…my second time around.

I believe that things happen in our lives that change our focus. It happens to all of us and it does not take much effort to get back to where we want to be. With that being said…fingers crossed that I get my MOJO back soon! (my photography MOJO has been gone for a year)

Today is the first day of Camp Robi, guess who is coming over soon? My favorite girl. Look for an update tomorrow….

Sewing Dresses, Again

I started sewing a new dress. Again. It is my favorite pattern, McCall’s 7969. (View A) There is a group of us on Instagram who are fans of this pattern and make it often. It is fun to see how others interpret the pattern and the fabrics that they use. In other countries, the fabrics are very different. It always inspires me.

Photo: My favorite pattern

I started the dress yesterday and will finish it today. The directions are easy and the overall pattern is uncomplicated. I enjoy making the dress very much and it will be prefect for a get away to the beach!

Photo: I chose a bright red-orange batik for this dress

I do not often wear bright colors, but this fabric piece caught my eye. It is wonderful to work with being 100% cotton.

Here is wishing you a bright, happy, uncomplicated day.

Last Week

Photo: Birthday Cake June 10, 2021

Last week, I celebrated another birthday! The day was filled with special moments and Larry cooked a birthday dinner.

Photo: A birthday dinner

Salmon, twice baked potatoes and sautéed zucchini. It was wonderful. He cooked it all! (oh and don’t forget that amazing birthday cake, that came from the bakery!)

The day after my birthday, the family met at my favorite restaurant. It was a wonderful time of being together. The “HIT” gift of the night was the BOB ROSS plush doll.

Something happens to birthdays when you get older. Good things happen….

It was a wonderful birthday …..Thank you, Larry. Lars, Josh and Matilda. Thank you Jamison and Jared. The celebration was perfection. I love you all.

Ten Years Ago Today

Before you start reading the blog, please turn on the music to your right—–>

Photo: Robin & Larry, private tour of Crazy Horse. Rapid City SD June 11, 2011

The photo above was taken 10 years ago today in South Dakota. I LOVED that trip to the Black Hills. We drove to Sturgis, Deadwood and enjoyed everything in between. It was heaven and Mt Rushmore was my absolute favorite. I would love to go back soon. A trip sounds lovely……where would you go if you could go anywhere?

On another note…I have a dear friend who is struggling right now. But then again, who of us is not struggling a little bit? To that friend, and others who might be reading, please try to stay positive and busy. Exercise and drink lots of water. With that being said, I suppose that I should take my own advice?

I am glad that it is Friday. June is almost half over. How did that happen?

Love you beyond the moon.

A Chainsaw

For the last three years the sweetest newly-wed couple rented the house next door. They were amazing neighbors for being so young. They bought a new house north of Plano and they were so excited about a house of their own. They moved out last weekend.

Late yesterday a chainsaw started humming. There was a gardener at the empty rental house, next door. He was cutting down all of the foliage around the fence that separates our yards. Larry and I built that fence years ago. I mixed the concrete for posts and Larry did all of the hammering. (I love to mix concrete) The gardeners chainsaw was loud.

Besides disliking the sound of a chainsaw (from the time Larry cut off his left hand pinky finger with one) I find myself upset about the change in landscape of the back garden. I cannot decide if that is an OLD PERSON thing or a Robin doesn’t feel good thing.

I get accustomed to how things look and sometimes rely on that to confirm that everything is OK. I must confess that this is a new feeling. As a Gemini, I usually love change and the energy that it brings. The good thing is, in a week the “new” landscape will be the “old” landscape. Right?

My answer would be….”The Little Book Of Yoga, With A Chainsaw”……That is kind of disgusting.

World’s Best Friend Day

Happy Best Friend’s Day

My Mother loved the poet Edgar Guest. She talked about his poetry and how famous he was during her lifetime… and in honor of World’s Best Friend Day. I found a sweet poem by Mr Guest.

Larry is my best friend and I have a small handful of friends. This handful of friends is the most incredible group of women. The poem below describes them perfectly.

When I think about what my friends mean to me and how they have been there through the good times and the bad, I get sentimental. There is honestly NOTHING like a friend is there?
